Common Traits & Actions of Successful People
Why do certain people get more done than others? Are there common traits amongst the most successful business owners? I spend a large amount of my time studying productivity and efficiency in business but I’m also fascinated by habits and especially the actions of traits that successful people seem to have in common. I mean if you want to be more successful in business and life, who better to study and learn from than other successful people? Right?
So I’ve compiled 8 common traits and actions that successful people have in common. Some of these are things that I do myself, some are things that many of my successful friends do, some are concepts and ideas that I’ve learned in books such as the classic 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey and The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. But if you’re looking to get to the next level in your business or feel more satisfied with your life, maybe give one of these ideas a try.
Number 1. They get up early in the morning. Now I know that everyone likes their sleep, and it honestly annoys the crud out of me when people say “oh but I need more sleep than most people.” I’m sorry but no you don’t. Yes all humans need sleep, but many people drastically overestimate overshoot how much you truly NEED. Successful people tend to be very good at maximizing their time and they don’t waste it by sleeping in. Many successful people also get up at the same time every day, regardless of whether it’s a weekday or a weekend. Your body likes it when you are consistent with your sleep schedule because it keeps your energy at an even keel which allows you to be more productive.
Number 2. They have a plan for the day. Successful people whether entrepreneurs or athletes have a plan and they execute on it. When they wake up in the morning they know exactly what’s on their schedule and what’s on their todo list in order to get closer to their goals. If you find that you wake up in the morning with no real clue what your plan is for the day, try planning your weeks ahead of time instead. Spend some time on Sunday evening and look at what’s on your calendar and what’s coming down the pipeline in your business and map out the tasks you’re going to focus on each day.
Number 3. Successful people don’t procrastinate. They take action, and they take action swiftly. They don’t wait for conditions to be perfect, and they also don’t spend 2 hours falling into a black hole of Facebook scrolling every morning. They get to work.

Number 4. Successful people never stop learning. They are obsessed with constantly absorbing information, possibly to a detriment at times. But no matter how they learn whether it’s books, podcasts, videos, courses, or coaching, they understand the value of always acting like a student. However one thing I do want to mention here is that you don’t want to use learning as a reason NOT to take action. So many business owners get stuck in this trap of continuously learning and consuming content instead of actually doing something. So while learning is absolutely important, don’t use it as a crutch or a means of procrastination from actually executing.
Number 5. Successful people meditate. They take intentional time every day to be still and typically also practice things like gratitude, visualization, and journaling. Now I, myself am still pretty new to meditation, but for the past several months I’ve been working to make it a part of my daily routine. I really like meditation apps so I’ve been using the Insight Timer app and I know many people enjoy the Calm app. If you’ve never tried meditation, begin carving out intentional time to focus and be still during your day and see what results you get.
Number 6. Successful people are self-aware. By self-aware I mean that people are very clear on their strengths, but also their weaknesses, they are extremely in tune with their own feelings, emotions, desires, and motivations, and they have a very solid understanding of their own character. How does this translate to business? When you are self-aware, you know where you should be focusing your time and abilities, you know how to interpret your strengths and use those in the best ways in your business, and you understand your weaknesses and where you might need help or where you might to expand your knowledge. Self-awareness is something that is developed over a long time and takes a lot of introspective work. But if you want to be successful, it’s a really important trait to have.
Number seven. Successful people aren’t afraid to let others help them. They aren’t control freaks.Successful people understand that they can’t do it all, and they don’t do everything well so it’s important get help in the areas that aren’t your forte so that you have more time and energy to focus on the things in your business that you rock at.
Number 8. Successful people have fun and make time for themselves. They aren’t workaholics! You can’t truly be successful if you hate your daily life. It’s so important to have balance and to be able to put your own oxygen mask on first so-to-speak and successful people intentionally carve out time for their families, hobbies, and passions and they truly make it a point to enjoy life. Because what’s the point of having a successful business if it doesn’t give you the freedom to enjoy your life!
