Searching for White Space
Last week I spoke at Inspired Retreat which is hosted by my friend Amber Housely. Inspired is a 4 day retreat in the woods of TN for female business owners (it was like business summer-camp) and it was awesome! I was honored to speak on pricing strategy for both product and service based businesses but more importantly I made some fabulous new friends, soaked up all sorts of business knowledge, and most importantly, took a step back from my business to just breath.
The past year has been a whirlwind as I’ve created this new venture while still maintaining my regular gig as a wedding planner with Stunning Events. No doubt an amazing whirlwind but I realized something as I walked through the woods between sessions, I need more white space. I need to take more time away from my business to just BE. As creative business owners we tend to always be making lists, checking things off, getting stuff done, creating, doing, keeping all the plates spinning (at least that’s how I am most of the time) but that mindset is hard to maintain for long.
Have you ever noticed that your best ideas come to you when you’re doing something totally mundane? Like driving, or taking a shower? It’s because you are giving your brain a break in that moment. When we take the time to do something merely because it’s fun and we enjoy it, or take time to just sit on the back porch and stare at the sky, we give our brains a chance to rest, and we create the space for new ideas to emerge, and we remember why we do this job to begin with.
So I urge you to take a step back and search for the white space. Find time this summer to really take breaks from your business. I promise it will be worth it.
